SETAC Recognizes Former STAR Fellow
May 22-26, 2005

Scott HechtLille, France - For the first time in the history of the European Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC), an American researcher has received the “Best Publication Award” in Environmental Science. Former STAR fellow Scott Hecht was presented with the award at the European SETAC meeting in Lille, France, held May 22-26, 2005. The BestPublication Award is given to a student or a young scientist under 35 years old for the best publication in the field of environmental sciences.

The research that earned Dr. Hecht this prestigious award was supported by and conducted while he was a STAR fellow earning his PhD at Oregon State University from 1999-2002. Dr. Hecht now works for NOAA Fisheries in Lacey, Washington, where he is the lead toxicologist on a national team evaluating the effects of pesticides on threatened and endangered salmonids.

According to Dr. Hecht, “This award casts a bright light on the STAR graduate program’s support of young scientists.” Dr. Hecht considers himself fortunate to have conducted this research with a highly skilled and interdisciplinary group of scientists from EPA, Sweden, and Switzerland.

The paper that earned Dr. Hecht the award is called: “Influences of sedimentary organic matter quality on the bioaccumulation of 4-nonylphenol by estuarine amphipods” in Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry, volume 23, issue 4, pages 865-873. The article is available at: http://entc.allenpress.com/entconline/?request=get-abstract&doi=10.1897%2F03-220 exit EPA. His research is important given that 4-nonylphenol, widely used as a plastic additive and surfactant, is a chemical with endocrine disrupting characteristics. EPA is now reviewing the effects of 4-nonylphenol in drafting water quality guidelines to protect aquatic organisms.
