| Title: | Training Workshop: Protection of Human Subjects in EPA's Research and Non-Research Studies, Including Those Conducted in EPA's Regions |
| Date: | September 26 - 29, 2005 |
| Location: | Seattle, WA |
| Contact: | Roseanne Lorenzana Region 10 ORD Science Liaison 206-553-8002 lorenzana.roseanne@epa.gov Patti Tyler |
| Purpose: | For staff in EPA regions to learn about regions' activities (including but not limited to EPA region grants and Superfund risk assessments) that may be subject to human subjects review and processes described in EPA's Policy 1000.17 and the Federal Common Rule (40 CFR 26).
Desired outcomes include understanding of, 1) EPA regions' activities that qualify as "human subjects research"; 2) the processes that "human subject research" must undergo to obtain approval; 3) the respective roles and responsibilities of EPA regions and headquarters in the "human subjects research" approval process; 4) how the EPA regions can provide better human subject study information; 5) the vulnerabilities and liabilities of EPA regions' staff; 6) EPA regions' activities needed to protect human subjects involved in regions' non-research activities, and 7) processes, contacts, and frames, as well as coordination and consistency approaches appropriate for EPA regions. Documentation of the above information is the tangible workshop product. This may include meeting notes, action items, roadmap and/or list(s) of where to go for help. Documentation will be specifically designed for use by regions, and may be produced in written format and/or be accessible through EPA's intranet via an interactive website. |
