EPA Announces Upcoming Competition Opportunity for P3 Grants
Tuesday, October 25, 2005
EPA’s 2006 competition for the P3 Phase I Awards will open during December, 2005. Up to 50 awards for a maximum of $10,000 each will be made to student teams in the autumn of 2006. In spring 2007, teams will be invited to bring their designs to Washington, D.C. to compete for the 3rd Annual P3 Award. The competition will be judged by the National Academy of Engineering for design innovation and technical merit along with relevant social, economic and environmental considerations that are key to sustainable designs.
The P3 competition is open to teams of students attending colleges, universities and other post-secondary educational institutions. Interdisciplinary teams are strongly encouraged, including representatives from multiple engineering departments and/or departments of chemistry, architecture, industrial design, economics, policy, social sciences, business, etc.
The P3 Award was launched in 2004 to respond to the technical needs of the developed and developing world in moving toward sustainability. This national competition enables college students to research, develop and design scientific, technical and policy solutions to sustainability challenges. Their designs will help achieve the mutual goals of economic prosperity while providing a higher quality of life and protecting the planet.
One of EPA’s highest priorities is ensuring that we have an adequate and well-trained scientific and technical workforce that can address the complex environmental and sustainability issues of tomorrow. In response to this need, EPA is supporting several programs, including P3, that foster current and future environmental professionals through education and sustainability efforts. For additional information on the P3 program refer to the P3 web site at: http://www.epa.gov/ncer/p3.
