Storage, use, and disposal of animal waste from CAFOs pose potential risks to the environment from nutrients, pathogens, heavy metals, hormones, antibiotics, and ammonia. Because steroid hormones can cause effects at reality low concentrations, researchers in EPA's Office of Research and Development (ORD) are performing an integrated assessment of the ecological risk of endocrine-active substances from representative CAFOs. Also, the EPA Science To Achieve Results (STAR) program has awarded 7 new assistance agreements to study the impact of animal waste handling and management strategies on the transport, fate, and effects of natural and synthetic steroid hormones associated with waste from CAFOs.

Workshop sessions will present the current state of research, regulation, and management of animal waste associated with CAFOs. Question and answer, guided discussion, and free time will provide ample opportunity for interaction and dialogue.

Workshop Goals:

• Provide a forum for discussion of research on the environmental impacts of CAFOs,
• Present an opportunity for researchers to present and discuss new and ongoing projects with current and potential collaborators,
• Promote communication with stakeholders from EPA, federal, state, and local agencies.
