Title: Use of a Corn Processing Co-Product as a Biofiller Material
in a Plastic Resin
Northern Illinois University students will study the different properties that corn co-products have when mixed with plastics to determine a "biofiller" that could reduce the amount of petroleum in plastic -- making a more biodegradable plastic. The United States currently produces over 3,000,000 tons of corn co-products, mostly from the manufacture of ethanol. These co-products, currently used primarily in animal feeds, could be used as filler for plastics.
