Title:Engineering the Biosynthesis of Styrene in Yeast

Carnegie Mellon University students will engineer microorganisms to produce styrene, a chemical compound used along with enormous amounts of natural gas to produce plastics, rubber, and insulation. The students will genetically modify yeast to synthesize the compound biologically, laying the groundwork for producing the chemical using clean and sustainable technology.
